Bryan Adams levytti kesähittinsä Summer of ´69 vuoden 1984 albumilleen Reckless. Entistä Whiskeytownin jäsentä, nykyisin vakuuttavaa ja levyjen julkaisutahdin suhteen tuotteliasta soloouraa urailevaa Ryan Adamsia on usein pyydetty keikoillaan soittamaan kyseinen kipale.

"PITCHFORK: Do you ever wonder if people go to Bryan Adams shows and yell out the names of your songs?
RYAN ADAMS: I think the only reason that they do that — I mean, they don’t really do it much anymore, I hear it once in a very long while — is because they think that it actually makes me mad."

Disco Ensemble toimi aluksi nimellä Disco, mutta yleisön toivottua lähes joka keikan aikana sitä yhtä tiettyä kappaletta päättivät bändin pojat, että nyt nimi muuttuu.

Nykyisin Caribou nimellä toimiva Daniel Snaithin IDM-proggis tunnettiin aiemmin nimellä Manitoba, mutta proto-punkin aikakaudelta tutuksi tulleen The Dictatorsin laulajan Richard Blumin, taiteilijanimeltään Handsome Dick Manitoban, vietyä asian oikeuteen tavaramerkin väärinkäytöstä joutui matemaatikko Snaith vaihtamaan nimensä Kanadan viidennestä provinssista Pohjois-Amerikkalaiseen peuraeläimeen.

"It's like The Smiths suing John Smith or something."

The Smithsien nimi taas oli vastareaktio synthpop-orkestereiden pömpöösimäisiin mittoihin yltäneille nimille kuten Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Darkille. Laulaja Morrissey perusteli valintaa näin vuonna 1984 Melody Makerin haastattelussa:

"... because it was the most ordinary name"

Se tavallisin nimi orkesterille taas ei ehkä ole Test Icicles. Sue-lehden bändin ainokaiseksi jääneen albumin For Screening Purposes Onlyn arvostelussa epäiltiinkin, että hyvät uudet bändien nimet ovat kohdanneet inflaation. Bändi ehti julkaista yhden levyn ja hajota 2006. Devonte Hynes lähti indiekantriurille sooloillessaan nimellä Lightspeed Champion. "Goofy" nimi sekin, voisi joku todeta. Nimestään he kertoivat kautta rantain näin:

"When Rory and Sam met, they each had a zillion different bands on the go. "There were about thirty people we hung about with and we'd come up with names for bands. Then we'd do something around it. Make up a couple of songs. Do a few gigs." It sounds like much more fun than gomming out on the sofa watching telly, a fact confirmed by Sam. "If I had cable it would be a disaster. It'd destroy my life." Dev would "turn up, hang out" and bump into Sam who would be hogging the earphones in the metal section of Virgin. He had his own "really bad hardcore bands" and joined the pair in a mission to party at impromptu gigs on East London's Commercial Rd, or in dirty warehouses. Via a My Space message, he heard he was in their newest band, Test Icicles - a name which referred to their previous band, Balls."

Entäs sitten vaihtoehto "ei nimeä"? Animal Collective kertokoon seuraavaksi bändin, tai pitäisikö puhua kollektiivista, nimen etymologiasta.

"Having a band name is too traditional, they say; they only have one because record labels have told them that listeners need to identify the group as a cohesive, named unit."

Yhtyeen debyyttialbumi Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished julkaistiin esimerkiksi nimellä Avey Tare and Panda Bear, kakkoslevy Danse Manatee sekä livelevy Hollinndagain nimellä Avey Tare, Panda Bear and Geologist ja niitä seurannut Campfire Songs eponyymisti. Vasta vuoden 2003 Here Comes The Indian julkaistiin nimellä Animal Collective. Entä kuka muistaa Led Zeppelinin neljännen nimettömän levyn kansitaiteen?

"It has no endorsed appellation published anywhere on the album's frontispiece, but is normally called Led Zeppelin IV after the group's preceding three releases. Atlantic Records' catalogue libraries have used the titles Four Symbols and The Fourth Album interchangeably; it has also been monikered as ZoSo, which the first sigil appears to signify, as well as Untitled. The album has also been referred to as Man with Sticks. Led Zeppelin guitarist Page commonly refers to the title in interviews as either Four Symbols or Led Zeppelin IV, while vocalist Robert Plant deems it as 'the fourth album, that's it'. "

Nimi kertoo jotain ajasta, jossa se on syntynyt. Xiu Xiun nimi keksittiin vuoden 1998 kiinalaisesta elokuvasta Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl. Bändi julkaisi debyyttilevynsä Knife Playn neljä vuotta myöhemmin.

"The first thing one tends to wonder about this San Jose, Calif., band is, "How do you pronounce X-I-U?" Well, sound the band name like you're saying shoe-shoe."

Xiu Xiu, ihan oikeesti hipsteriä isolla HOOLLA. !!!-yhtyeen nimeen on hyvä lopettaa. Se on niin häimee!

"The band's name was inspired by the subtitles of the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy, in which the mouth-clicking sounds of the Bushmen were represented as "!". In the International Phonetic Alphabet postalveolar click consonants are represented by ! which is not an exclamation mark but a pipe with a subscript dot."

"However, as the bandmembers themselves say, !!! is pronounced by repeating thrice any monosyllabic sound. Chk Chk Chk is the most common pronunciation, but they could just as easily be called Pow Pow Pow, Bam Bam Bam, Uh Uh Uh, etc."

"I would have used Victor Borge's "phonetic pronunciation" guide instead, for the more sibilant and implosive "fsss-poik, fsss-poik, fss-poik!"
